Leadership Lesson from WHO?

A symphony. Specifically a conductor of a symphony.

I didn’t think it’d pique my interest, but two minutes turned into five into ten turned into the 23 minute lesson which I’ve thought about quite a few times this evening.

It’s a great lesson. Entertaining. Thought provoking. Educational. Inspirational. Convicting. I think in each of us there are these various styles of leadership that rest within, but for some certain styles are more natural. This was such a unique glance at leadership, and it underscores to me the importance of the principle taught within the mini-lecture, but also how critical leadership is in every environment.

A Great Fall Weekend at Xpand Your Business

You could not ask for a better place to spend this past October weekend than at the Alderbrook Resort in Union, Wash., reveling in the great achievements of our newest Gold and Platinum Associates this past year.

I always say that big decisions are made at big events like this one. And between meetings with the Field Leadership Council and members of the Montreal leadership, I’m so excited for what’s to come in this last quarter of 2009, looking ahead to 2010! There were also great training workshops with everyone in attendance and even greater stories shared. I loved the heartfelt community-building and the recognition of so many deserving folks who worked so hard all year!

Celebrating with Marcella and David SkultetyIt was a sold-out event with probably about 80 different Associate accounts represented, and I’m thinking we actually had the entire resort here locked up for the weekend. I’m so grateful for everyone who made this such a memorable event.

If you were on our waiting list and didn’t get to attend, I’m really sorry you missed this great weekend, but never fear! Our next big event happens later this month at the Portland, Ore. Super Regional beginning October 23!

Do what you Love, Love what you Do

I get inspired watching someone who is an expert at whatever they do, doing it and doing it well. And it is simply icing on the cake when it is clear that they also love their jobs.

Jack Borden is a 101-year-old attorney. He clearly doesn’t need to continue practicing law at his age, but he views his work as energizing and rewarding.

“I have to use a walker because of old age, so there’s not much else I could do except sit in my house. Why do that when I can not only enjoy life, but help some people?”

He’s what grabbed my attention in this story I saw recently about working seniors, as he reminded me of so many Univera Associates who — at various stages in their lives — have found fulfillment in sharing our opportunities for financial and physical renewal with others.

It was just another reminder of how important it is to have passion and a sense of purpose in what you do.

I am heartened, but hardly surprised, whenever I hear of someone who has experienced something life-changing with Univera. Our passion, like Jack’s, is to help people.

Including those not as fortunate as Jack to have a life-long career. Their stories of financial struggles are also told in the article below.

Speaking for the Univera community, isn’t it great to know that you have something you can share with people like these, to help them find not only a viable way to support their livelihoods but also a way to apply purpose to their lives?

Jack Borden would like you to consider working well past retirement age. As a 101-year-old attorney, he has the credibility to encourage it.
Borden, who has been practicing law for the better part of 70 years, still spends about 40 hours a week at his office in Weatherford, Texas, handling estate planning, probate and real estate matters.
Retire? Not while he’s able to help folks.
